GEO vs SEO: The Real Differences and Where to Focus First
GEO is mostly SEO with a different scoreboard. Here is what actually changes, what does not, and where to start.
Read articleGoogle says there are no special tricks for AI Overviews. That is true, and it is also why most sites miss out: they skip the basics that decide which pages get picked.

This guide explains how to rank in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode using what Google has actually published, plus what I see working on client sites. It is part of my AI search optimization guide.
To appear as a source in AI Overviews, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google. Google says no extra files, schema or special optimization are needed. Your chances improve when the page ranks well for related searches, answers the question directly in a clear passage, shows real expertise and is technically healthy.

AI Overviews are AI-written summaries shown at the top of some Google results, with links to the pages used. AI Mode is a separate, conversational search experience that goes deeper and also links to sources. Both are built on Google’s normal search index and ranking systems.
| Requirement | Why it matters | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| Page is crawlable | Blocked pages cannot be used | robots.txt tester |
| Page is indexed | Only indexed pages are eligible | Search Console URL Inspection |
| Snippet allowed | nosnippet or a tight max-snippet limits use | Check robots meta tags |
| Helpful, people-first content | Same ranking systems apply | Google’s helpful content questions |
Google adds that meeting these rules does not guarantee a page will be shown. Selection is automatic.
H2: How long does it take for backlinks to work?
First paragraph: “Most backlinks start to affect rankings 4 to 12 weeks after Google crawls and indexes the linking page. Links on strong, frequently crawled sites are counted sooner. Competitive keywords can take several months of steady link building.”
Then a short list of the factors that speed it up or slow it down.
Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews are included in the Search Console Performance report for Web search; there is no separate filter. Watch pages that answer questions: if impressions rise but clicks fall, AI Overviews may be answering the query. Improve the title and give a reason to click for detail, such as a tool, template or calculator. For example, link to the free SEO checklist or a free tool.
I optimise your site for AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity: answer-first content, entity and schema fixes, and brand mentions on sites AI tools cite.
No. Selection is automatic. Indexed pages that can show a snippet are eligible.
You can use nosnippet or max-snippet robots rules, but they also limit your normal search snippets.
For some simple questions, yes. Pages that offer tools, templates, data or deeper detail still earn clicks.
It helps Google understand your page, but Google says no special schema is required for AI features.
Search your target questions in Google and check the sources listed, and watch Search Console impressions for those pages.

Sites that cover one topic deeply tend to rank for more of it, faster. Topical authority is not a score; it is the result of complete, well-linked coverage plus outside recognition.
