ReadSEO helps you rank. AEO helps you become the answer. Here is how they fit together.

This guide explains AEO vs SEO in plain words, where GEO fits, and what Google itself says about AI Overviews.
SEO helps your pages rank in search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) shapes your content so it can be quoted directly as the answer in featured snippets, People Also Ask and voice search. GEO extends this to AI tools like ChatGPT. You need SEO first, because answer engines only quote pages they can find and trust.

SEO (search engine optimization) is the work that helps your pages get crawled, indexed and ranked in search results. It covers content, technical health and links, and its success is measured in rankings, clicks and traffic. My SEO services cover each part.
AEO (answer engine optimization) is the work of making your content the direct, quotable answer to a question. It uses short answer paragraphs, question headings, lists and tables. Google’s Google guide to featured snippets says its systems decide which page becomes a featured snippet, and you cannot mark content to be chosen, so clear answers are the only lever.
GEO (generative engine optimization) aims to get your brand cited by AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. It relies on clear facts about your business, brand mentions on trusted sites and content worth quoting. See my GEO services.
No. Google’s Google guide to AI features and your website says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that you do not need new machine-readable files or special schema. A page simply has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.
That is why good SEO comes first. AEO and GEO work makes your already-eligible pages easier to quote.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in results | Be the quoted answer | Be cited by AI tools |
| Main tactics | Content, technical, links | Answer paragraphs, question headings, lists | Brand mentions, entity facts, citable content |
| Measured by | Rankings, clicks | Snippets won, PAA appearances | AI citations and referrals |
| Depends on | Crawling and indexing | SEO | SEO and brand signals |
A plumber writes a page on fixing a dripping tap. SEO gets it indexed and ranking. A 50 word answer under the heading “How do you fix a dripping tap?” makes it quotable, which is AEO. Mentions of the business on local news and trade sites help AI tools trust and recommend it, which is GEO.
No. AEO builds on SEO. Without indexed, trusted pages there is nothing for answer engines to quote.
Google says no special files are needed for AI Overviews. Some other AI tools may read llms.txt, so it is optional and harmless.
It is a 40 to 60 word answer placed right under a question heading, written so it makes sense on its own when quoted.
Schema helps search engines understand a page, but Google says no special schema is needed for AI features. Clear visible text matters most.
Google includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type.
No. Google and AI tools choose their own answers. Good structure only improves your chances.
