Link building guide: how to build safe backlinks
What I have learned from more than 5000 link building orders, explained step by step.
ReadBoth build backlinks, but they carry very different levels of risk.

If you are choosing between guest posts vs PBN links, this page explains how each one works and why I recommend guest posts for any site you care about long term.
Guest posts on real, relevant websites are safer than PBN links. A guest post sits on a site with its own readers, so it can last for years and send real visitors. PBN links come from networks built mainly to pass links, which fits Google’s link spam definition and can be ignored or penalised.

A guest post is an article you publish on another real website, with a link back to your site inside helpful content. Because the site has its own audience, the link looks natural and can bring visitors as well as SEO value. See how I handle guest posts on niche blogs.
A PBN, or private blog network, is a group of websites, often built on expired domains, that exist mainly to link to other sites. They usually have thin content and little or no real traffic.
Google’s Google spam policies do not use the word PBN, but they define link spam as creating links primarily to manipulate rankings and list “creating low-value content primarily for the purposes of manipulating linking and ranking signals” as an example. A typical PBN fits that description.
Guest posts win on risk, lifespan and extra value, while PBN links only look cheaper at first.
| Factor | Guest posts on real sites | PBN links |
|---|---|---|
| Audience | Real readers | Usually none |
| Risk | Lower | High |
| Lifespan | Usually lasts for years | Often dropped when the network is found |
| Extra value | Referral visits and brand trust | None |
| Cost over time | Steady | Cheap at first, costly if links are lost or penalised |
Paid links are allowed by Google when they carry rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow", according to its Google guide to qualifying outbound links. Links paid for only to pass ranking credit fall under link spam, so the safest guest posts are the ones that would make sense even without the link.
Choose relevant guest posts, brand mentions and content that earns links. That is the approach I use for clients, and it is why I do not offer PBN links. For the bigger picture, read the full link building guide.
Imagine two similar online stores. Store A builds 4 relevant guest posts a month on real fashion blogs. Store B buys 50 cheap network links in one week. If the network is found and devalued, Store B loses most of its links at once, while Store A keeps its links and the visitors they send.
Google says it detects and neutralises many link schemes automatically. Networks often share patterns such as similar hosting, owners, designs and thin content.
No link building method is completely risk-free. Relevant posts on real sites, natural anchors and steady growth keep the risk low.
They cost little to create because the sites have no real audience or editorial standards. That is also why they carry high risk.
Some may pass value for a while, but they can stop working whenever the network is found. That makes them a poor base for a long-term strategy.
Stop adding new ones and focus on quality links. Use the disavow tool only if you receive a manual action or have clear evidence of a problem.
No. I focus on guest posts, brand mentions and supporting links on real sites, because they are safer for my clients.
