GEO vs SEO: The Real Differences and Where to Focus First
GEO is mostly SEO with a different scoreboard. Here is what actually changes, what does not, and where to start.
Read articleGoogle and AI tools understand topics and entities, not just matching words. Semantic SEO is how you build a site that covers a topic so well that both trust it.

This guide explains semantic SEO in plain words and shows the exact method I used to plan the content on this site. It is part of my AI search optimization guide.
Semantic SEO means optimizing for the meaning and context of a topic instead of a single keyword. You cover the whole topic, its entities (people, brands, things, concepts) and the questions around it, organize pages into clusters linked to a pillar page, and use structured data so search engines and AI tools understand who you are and what you know.

Google’s systems understand language: synonyms, related concepts, and what a searcher actually wants. A page about “running shoes” that never mentions cushioning, drop, pronation, sizes or terrain looks thin next to a page that covers them. AI answer engines go further, pulling the clearest passage from the most complete source. Covering a topic deeply is now the way to rank for hundreds of related searches, not one.
| Block | Meaning | Example (topic: link building) |
|---|---|---|
| Central entity | Who or what the site is about | Zahid Awais, SEO and link building provider |
| Entities | Things, people and concepts in the topic | backlink, anchor text, DR, Google, PageRank |
| Search intent | What the searcher wants to do | Learn, compare, buy |
| Topical map | The full list of subtopics to cover | Types of links, metrics, risks, cost, tools |
| Content clusters | Pillar page plus linked cluster articles | Link building guide + 14 supporting articles |
| Structured data | Machine-readable facts about pages and entities | Person, Article, FAQPage, Service schema |
zahidawais.com is planned around seven pillars: link building, on-page SEO, technical SEO, local SEO, e-commerce SEO, AI search (AEO and GEO) and content SEO. Each pillar has a guide, 6 to 14 supporting articles and matching free tools. For example, the link building cluster includes what is a backlink, dofollow vs nofollow, anchor text ratio, DR vs DA and the anchor text ratio calculator, all pointing to the link building service.
AI answer engines retrieve passages, judge whether a source is trustworthy on the topic, and prefer entities they can identify clearly. A site with deep, well-linked coverage and a consistent entity is easier to retrieve, easier to trust and easier to quote. That is why I treat semantic SEO as the base of every AEO and GEO project.
I optimise your site for AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity: answer-first content, entity and schema fixes, and brand mentions on sites AI tools cite.
It is optimizing for topics and meaning rather than single keywords: covering a subject fully, with its related concepts and questions, in well-linked pages.
A clearly defined thing, such as a person, company, place, product or concept, that search engines can recognise and connect to other facts.
A planned list of all the subtopics and questions a site should cover for its main topic, grouped into pillars and clusters.
No. LSI keywords are an old, misunderstood idea. Semantic SEO is about covering concepts, intent and entities for readers, not adding a list of words.
Usually several months, because it means building and linking many pages. Gains tend to compound as the cluster grows.

Sites that cover one topic deeply tend to rank for more of it, faster. Topical authority is not a score; it is the result of complete, well-linked coverage plus outside recognition.

Google and AI tools think in entities: people, companies, places and things they can identify. Entity SEO makes sure your brand is one of them, with facts that agree everywhere.
