Keyword Cannibalization Fix: How to Find and Solve It
How to spot pages competing for the same search, decide what to do with each one, and fix it without losing traffic.
Read articleMeta descriptions do not move rankings directly, but they decide whether people click. Here is how long they should be, when Google ignores them and examples that work.

This guide explains how to write a meta description that earns clicks, with length rules, a formula and real examples. It is part of my on-page SEO checklist.
A meta description is a short summary of a page in the HTML head. Google often shows it as the snippet under the title link. Write a unique, accurate summary of about 120 to 155 characters that tells the searcher what they get and why they should click. Google may show different text if another part of the page answers the query better.

<meta name="description" content="A 25-point on-page SEO checklist for 2026 ...">It lives in the page’s <head> and is not visible on the page itself. Google says it uses the meta description for the snippet when it describes the page better than other text on the page.
Not directly. Its job is to win the click. A clear description can raise click-through rate, and more clicks from the same rankings means more traffic and more leads.
Google does not set a character limit; snippets are cut to fit the device. In practice about 120 to 155 characters shows fully on most screens, with mobile a little shorter. Put the most important words in the first 120 characters. Check length with my meta description length checker and preview the result in the SERP snippet preview.
What the page is + the main benefit + proof or detail + soft call to action.

Google rewrites snippets often, especially for long-tail searches where another paragraph on the page matches the query better. That is normal. It becomes a problem only when Google picks poor text, usually because the description is missing, duplicated, too short or unrelated to the page. Answering key questions clearly in the content helps Google choose good snippet text either way.
Imagine a store with the same description, “Welcome to our online store”, on 800 product pages. The fix is a template built from page data (product name, top feature, price and delivery note), plus hand-written descriptions for the 40 best sellers. Rankings stay the same, but every snippet now gives searchers a reason to click.
I fix titles, meta descriptions, headings, internal links and schema across your whole site, page by page, with a before and after report.
About 120 to 155 characters usually shows in full. Google has no hard limit and cuts snippets to fit the screen.
Every important page should have a unique one. For very large sites, generated descriptions from page data are better than none.
Google picks the text it thinks best answers the search. It often shows another passage from the page, especially for specific queries.
Yes, naturally. Google bolds words that match the search, which helps the snippet stand out.
Avoid it. Duplicate descriptions are less useful and Google is more likely to replace them.
