Link Building for New Websites: A Practical 6 Month Plan
A new site needs a few trusted links, not a big package. This month by month plan shows what to build and when.
Read articleA niche edit adds your link to an article that is already live and indexed. Done on real, relevant pages it is one of the fastest link types. Done badly it is just a paid link on a spam site.

This guide explains niche edits (also called link insertions or curated links), how they differ from guest posts and how to tell a safe one from a risky one. It is part of my link building guide.
A niche edit is a backlink added to an existing article on another website, instead of publishing a new post. It can work faster than a guest post because the page is already indexed and may already rank. It is only worth it when the site has real traffic, the article is truly relevant, and the link adds value for readers.

| Niche edit | Guest post | |
|---|---|---|
| Page age | Existing, often months or years old | Brand new |
| Indexing | Usually already indexed | Needs to be crawled and indexed |
| Existing links to the page | Sometimes has its own backlinks | None at the start |
| Content control | Limited, a sentence or two | Full article |
| Speed of effect | Often faster | Slower |
| Main risk | Irrelevant pages stuffed with paid links | Low quality “write for us” sites |
For the risky side of paid links, read guest posts vs PBN links.
Google’s spam policies count buying links that pass ranking value as link spam, so no paid link is risk-free. The way to keep risk low is to make every link one a real editor could choose for readers:
| Check | Good sign | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Page traffic | Ranks for real keywords | Zero traffic, never ranked |
| Outbound links | A few useful sources | 10+ links to casinos, loans, unrelated sites |
| Relevance | Same topic as your page | “Best pet beds” linking to a law firm |
| Indexing | Shows in Google for its URL | Not indexed |
| Site history | Same niche for years | Expired domain rebuilt to sell links |
The full site-level checklist is in how to check guest post site quality.
The best placement is inside a paragraph that already talks about your subject, high enough that readers see it. Use a natural anchor: your brand, a partial phrase or a descriptive phrase that fits the sentence. Exact match anchors on niche edits are one of the clearest signs of a bought link.
An existing article “How to prepare your home for winter” ranks for several long-tail terms. A sentence is added in the heating section: “If your boiler is over 15 years old, this boiler replacement guide explains costs and options.” The link points to a heating company’s guide page. It is relevant, useful and natural.
I have placed 5000+ links for clients, including brands like Capterra UK, Adobe and OKX. I only use real sites with real traffic, and every link is checked live for 6 months.

They can work faster because the page is already indexed and may have authority. Guest posts give more control over content. A good campaign often uses both.
Paid links that pass ranking value are against Google’s spam policies. Keep risk low with relevant, real sites and natural, useful placements.
Often faster than new posts, because Google recrawls existing pages. Many show an effect within 4 to 8 weeks.
Site owners update or delete articles, or sell the site. Track links monthly and work with a provider that replaces removed links.
