Density = count x words in term / total words x 100. Phrases never cross punctuation.

The free word frequency counter runs in your browser, needs no sign-up and never sends what you type anywhere.
This word frequency counter lists every word, or every two or three word phrase, in your text by how often it appears, with stop words filtered out. Use it to spot repetition: if one word makes up more than about 3% of a short page, read it aloud and replace some uses with natural variations.
A word frequency counter is a tool that counts how many times each word or phrase appears in a text. Density is the number of words the term accounts for divided by the total number of words, times 100.

There is no ideal keyword density, and Google has never published one. Its SEO Starter Guide says that repeating the same words over and over is tiring for users and that keyword stuffing is against its spam policies. Use the main term where it fits naturally, usually in the title, first paragraph and a heading.
Stop words are very common words such as the, and, of, to and is that appear in almost every text. Removing them shows the meaningful words that describe your topic. This tool uses a list of about 170 common English stop words.
Switch the counter to two or three word phrases. Any phrase that appears three or more times in a short article is worth checking, because repeated phrases often make text sound robotic. Replace some with a synonym or a pronoun.
| Term | Count | Density (500 word page) |
|---|---|---|
| link building | 6 | 2.40% |
| backlinks | 5 | 1.00% |
| guest posts | 4 | 1.60% |
| outreach | 3 | 0.60% |
| anchor text | 2 | 0.80% |
Example: in a 500 word article the phrase "link building" appears 6 times. It covers 12 words, so its density is 12 divided by 500, times 100, which is 2.4%. The single word "backlinks" appears 5 times, a density of 1%.
Density is the count multiplied by the number of words in the term, divided by the total words in the text, times 100. A two word phrase used 5 times in 1,000 words has a density of 1%. Stop words are included in the total word count.
The counter is case insensitive and splits words at spaces and punctuation, so SEO and seo count as one word. Hyphenated words are split into parts, and phrases never cross a full stop, comma or line break.
It is best for checking your own content or a competitor page you pasted. It shows which terms the text uses most, not how many people search for them. Use a keyword research tool for search volumes.
The CSV file contains every term in the current view, with its rank, the term, its count and its density. You can open it in Excel, Google Sheets or any spreadsheet app to sort, filter or compare pages.
It counts words in most languages that use spaces between words, including accented Latin letters. The stop word list is English only, so turn off stop word removal for other languages to avoid odd results.
No. All counting happens in your browser with JavaScript. The text you paste and the CSV file you download never leave your device, so drafts and client pages stay private.
