Keyword Cannibalization Checker: what it does and an example result

The free keyword cannibalization checker runs in your browser, needs no sign-up and never sends what you type anywhere.

    Quick answer

This keyword cannibalization checker compares the target keyword of every URL you paste and groups pages that share the same or very similar terms, ignoring word order, stop words and plurals. Each group is a possible conflict. Confirm it in Search Console, then merge, retarget or interlink the pages so one clearly owns each topic.

What is a keyword cannibalization checker?

A keyword cannibalization checker is a tool that finds multiple URLs on one site aimed at the same query. It turns each keyword into a sorted set of meaningful word stems, scores every pair of URLs by word overlap (shared words divided by all distinct words), and groups pairs above your chosen threshold.

    1. Export or type your keyword map with one URL and its main target keyword per line.
    2. Paste it into the box; spreadsheet columns pasted as tabs also work.
    3. Choose Strict, Balanced or Loose matching.
    4. Review each conflict group and the URLs that compete in it.
    5. Confirm in Search Console, then merge, retarget or interlink the pages and copy the report.

    What is keyword cannibalization?

Keyword cannibalization is when two or more pages on the same site target the same search intent, so they compete with each other. Rankings can swap between the URLs, and neither page ranks as well as one strong combined page would.

Is keyword cannibalization a Google penalty?

No, it is not a penalty. Google simply picks the page it thinks fits a query best, and that may not be the page you prefer. The real costs are split links, diluted relevance and unstable rankings, which is why consolidation often helps.

How do I fix keyword cannibalization?

Merge pages with the same intent into the strongest one and 301 redirect the others; if pages serve different intents, retarget one and link between them. For duplicates that must stay live, use a canonical. See Google's guide to consolidating duplicate URLs.

    Worked example

    Example

Example: the sample map has 8 URLs. On Balanced (60%), the checker finds 2 groups covering 4 URLs: "dog grooming cost" and "cost of dog grooming" use the same words, and "best dog shampoo" and "best shampoo for dogs" match once plurals and stop words are removed. Switching to Loose (45%) widens group 1 to 4 URLs, pulling in "dog grooming leeds" and "dog groomer leeds" at 50% overlap, which is worth a manual intent check.

    Frequently asked questions

What data do I need for this checker?

You need a simple keyword map: each URL with the main keyword it targets. Many SEO tools and content plans already have one. You can also build it from Search Console by taking the top query for each page from the Performance report.

    How is similarity calculated?

Each keyword is reduced to a set of word stems without stop words, so order and simple plurals do not matter. Two keywords are compared by shared words divided by all distinct words. Strict needs 100%, Balanced 60% and Loose 45%.

Are all flagged pages really cannibalizing?

Not always. Two pages can share words but serve different intents, such as a local service page and an informational guide. Treat each group as a prompt to check Search Console and the live results, then decide whether the pages truly compete.

How do I confirm cannibalization in Search Console?

Open the Performance report, filter by the query, and look at the Pages tab. If two or more of your URLs get impressions for the same query and their positions swap over time, they are likely competing.

Should I delete one of the competing pages?

Rarely delete outright. If the pages cover the same intent, merge the useful content into the stronger URL and 301 redirect the weaker one so its links and visitors are kept. Deleting without a redirect throws that value away.

    Is my keyword list uploaded?

No. The comparison runs entirely in your browser with plain JavaScript. Your URLs and keywords are never sent to a server, stored or tracked, so client keyword maps stay private.
