Keyword Cannibalization Fix: How to Find and Solve It
How to spot pages competing for the same search, decide what to do with each one, and fix it without losing traffic.
Read articleHeadings are the outline of your page for readers, Google and AI tools. Here is how many H1s you need, how to nest H2 to H6 and the mistakes that confuse everyone.

This guide explains how to use heading tags for SEO, from the H1 down to H6. It is part of my on-page SEO checklist.
Use one H1 that states the page’s main topic, H2s for the main sections, and H3s for subsections inside an H2. Headings should read like a table of contents, use the words people search, and never skip levels just for styling. Clear headings help readers skim, help Google understand the page, and help AI tools find the passage that answers a question.

Heading tags (<h1> to <h6>) mark the titles of sections on a page. Browsers show them larger, screen readers use them to navigate, and search engines use them to understand the page’s structure.
Google has said multiple H1s are not a problem for Search. For clarity and accessibility, one visible H1 that matches the page topic is still the best practice. Google’s title link documentation also notes it may use the main visible heading when it builds title links, so a clear H1 helps there too.

Paste any URL into my free heading structure checker to see the outline, missing H1s and skipped levels. In WordPress, use the block editor’s List View to see the heading order.
Before: H1 “Welcome”, H2 “Our Services”, H2 “Why Us”. After: H1 “Emergency Plumber in Leeds, 24/7”, H2 “What we fix”, H2 “How fast we arrive”, H2 “Prices”, H2 “Reviews from Leeds customers”, H2 “FAQ”. The second outline tells readers and Google exactly what the page offers.

Google says it is not a problem for Search, but one clear H1 is better for readers and accessibility.
They help Google understand the page structure and topic. Clear headings support rankings and featured snippets, but they are not a strong factor on their own.
They should match in meaning. The title can be shorter and include the brand.
Avoid it. Skipping levels makes the outline confusing for screen readers and harder to follow.
Short enough to scan, usually under 70 characters, and clear about what the section covers.
