A link on a page Google has not indexed does little for you. Here is why linking pages go unindexed and the safe ways to help Google find them.
This guide explains how to get backlinks indexed in Google, and why some never are. It is part of my link building guide.
Quick answer
A backlink only helps when Google crawls and indexes the page it sits on. To help, place links on pages that already get crawled, ask the site owner to link the new article from its home page or category pages and include it in their sitemap, share it where real people click, and choose sites whose new posts get indexed quickly. If a page stays unindexed for months, the site is usually the problem.
Why linking pages are not indexed
- The site publishes too many low value posts, so Google crawls it rarely.
- The new article has no internal links pointing to it (orphan page).
- The page is thin, duplicated or written only to hold links.
- Technical issues:
noindex, robots.txt blocks, slow or failing server. - Google crawled it but chose not to index it. See crawled, currently not indexed.
How to check if a backlink page is indexed
- Search the exact URL in Google, or use
site:with the URL. - Search a unique sentence from the article in quotes.
- If the page is yours, use URL Inspection in Search Console. For other sites you cannot.
Allow 2 to 4 weeks for new articles on healthy sites before you worry.
7 safe ways to help indexing
- Choose sites that get indexed fast. Check that their recent posts appear in Google within days. This is one of my standard checks; see site quality checklist.
- Prefer niche edits on indexed pages when speed matters. See niche edits.
- Ask for internal links: from the site’s home page, category page or a related popular post.
- Sitemap: make sure the post is in the site’s XML sitemap.
- Share the article on social channels and newsletters where real readers click.
- Link to the guest post from your own site where it is genuinely relevant, such as a “featured in” page.
- Make the article worth indexing: original, useful, well formatted content, not a 400-word holder for a link.
Indexing tricks to avoid

What if the page never gets indexed?
If a linking page is still unindexed after 6 to 8 weeks and the site’s other new posts are indexed, ask the owner to improve or relink the post. If the whole site struggles to get indexed, that is a sign Google does not trust it. A good provider should replace those links. I replace any client link that is not indexed or is removed within 6 months.

Do backlinks need to be indexed to count?
Google needs to crawl the linking page to see the link. Pages that are not indexed usually pass little or no value.

On healthy, frequently crawled sites, often a few days to 4 weeks.
Can I submit someone else's page to Google?
Not through Search Console. You can only request indexing for properties you own.
Do backlink indexer tools work?
Many rely on spam links or misuse APIs, and results rarely last. Choosing well-crawled sites is safer and more reliable.
Why is my guest post not indexed?
The site may be crawled rarely, the post may lack internal links, or Google may see the content as low value.
