Link Building for New Websites: A Practical 6 Month Plan
A new site needs a few trusted links, not a big package. This month by month plan shows what to build and when.
Read articleThere is no magic number of links per month. What matters is whether your link growth looks like the way real sites earn links. Here is how to plan a safe pace.

This guide explains link velocity, the speed at which a site gains new backlinks, and how to plan a pace that looks natural. It is part of my link building guide.
Google has not published a safe number of links per month. A natural pace matches your site’s size, niche and history: steady growth from relevant sites, with occasional spikes that have a clear reason, such as a news mention or a viral tool. Problems come from sudden waves of low quality links with the same anchor text, not from the number alone.

Link velocity is the number of new referring domains (or links) a site gains over a period, usually per month. SEOs watch it because manipulative campaigns often create unnatural patterns: zero links for a year, then 200 in a week from unrelated sites.
Google does not confirm a “link velocity” signal. What Google does say is that links made to manipulate rankings are link spam. Unnatural speed is often a side effect of that: bought link packages, automated links and networks tend to arrive in bursts. So the safest goal is not a number but a pattern that looks earned.
These are my working ranges for new referring domains from quality, relevant sites per month. They are not Google rules; adjust them to what top competitors in your niche gain.
| Situation | Starting pace | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Brand new site (0 to 6 months) | 2 to 6 | Start with brand, URL and citation links |
| Small business site | 4 to 10 | Mix guest posts, niche edits, local links |
| Established site in a competitive niche | 10 to 30+ | Match competitors’ growth |
| After a news mention or viral content | A natural spike | Fine when the reason is real |
A 6-month plan for a small business could be: months 1 and 2, citations and 3 brand-anchor guest posts each month; months 3 to 6, 5 to 8 links a month mixing guest posts and niche edits to the home page, two service pages and two guides. The total grows steadily and every month looks like the last, only slightly stronger.
Do not panic or delete everything. Stop adding low quality links, review the new links, remove or disavow only clear spam if there is a real risk of a manual action, and continue with steady, quality links. See toxic backlinks and disavow.
I have placed 5000+ links for clients, including brands like Capterra UK, Adobe and OKX. I only use real sites with real traffic, and every link is checked live for 6 months.
There is no official number. A steady pace from relevant, real sites that matches your site and competitors is safest.
Speed alone is rarely the problem. Large bursts of low quality or paid links with similar anchors are what trigger issues.
Yes, gradually. Start with brand, citation and a few quality guest post links, then increase the pace over months.
Not if there is a real reason, such as press coverage. Unexplained spikes of spammy links are the concern.
Use the referring domains graph in Ahrefs or Semrush, or export new links from Search Console regularly.
