Link Building for New Websites: A Practical 6 Month Plan
A new site needs a few trusted links, not a big package. This month by month plan shows what to build and when.
Read articleDR (Ahrefs) and DA (Moz) both estimate a site's link strength, and both are easy to fake. Here is how they work, how they differ and what to check instead.

This guide compares DR vs DA, the two most quoted website metrics in link building, and shows what I check before placing any link. It is part of my link building guide.
DR (Domain Rating, by Ahrefs) and DA (Domain Authority, by Moz) are third-party scores from 0 to 100 that estimate how strong a site’s backlink profile is. Google does not use either one. Both can be inflated with cheap links, so always check real organic traffic, relevance and indexing before trusting a high score.

Domain Rating is Ahrefs’ score for the strength of a website’s backlink profile, on a logarithmic scale from 0 to 100. It is based mainly on how many unique domains link to a site and how strong those linking domains are. Moving from DR 70 to 80 is much harder than moving from DR 10 to 20.
Domain Authority is Moz’s score from 1 to 100 that predicts how likely a site is to rank, compared with other sites. It uses Moz’s own link index and a machine learning model. Like DR, it is logarithmic and only meaningful when you compare sites against each other.
| DR (Ahrefs) | DA (Moz) | |
|---|---|---|
| Made by | Ahrefs | Moz |
| Scale | 0 to 100, logarithmic | 1 to 100, logarithmic |
| Measures | Strength of the backlink profile | Predicted ranking ability |
| Main input | Linking domains and their DR | Moz link data in a ranking model |
| Used by Google? | No | No |
| Easy to inflate? | Yes, with links from high DR spam sites | Yes, with large numbers of cheap links |
Because many buyers filter sites by DA or DR alone, some sellers pump these numbers on purpose. In the thousands of sites I have reviewed for client orders, the most common traps are:
Site A: DA 62, DR 58, about 300 organic visits a month, publishes 40 guest posts a week on every topic. Site B: DA 34, DR 41, about 25,000 organic visits a month, all in home improvement. For a kitchen renovation client, the link from Site B is far more valuable, even though its scores are lower.
site: search shows the site’s pages in Google.I explain this whole process step by step in how to check guest post site quality.
Use DR or DA only as a first filter, never as the final decision. If you have Ahrefs, DR plus Ahrefs organic traffic is a quick pair to start with. If you use Moz, compare DA with Moz’s spam score. Then check the site by hand. A lower DR site with real readers in your niche will almost always beat a higher DR site with none.
Also look at the strength of the page, not only the domain. A link inside an older, already indexed article that ranks for something often helps more than a link on a brand new post.
I have placed 5000+ links for clients, including brands like Capterra UK, Adobe and OKX. I only use real sites with real traffic, and every link is checked live for 6 months.
Neither is more accurate for Google rankings, because Google uses neither. Many SEOs prefer DR plus Ahrefs traffic data, but both must be checked against real organic traffic.
No. DA and DR are third-party metrics from Moz and Ahrefs. Google has its own systems and does not use these scores.
There is no magic number. A DR 30 to 50 site with real, relevant traffic is often a better choice than a DR 70 site with no traffic.
Usually the DA was inflated with cheap or irrelevant links, or the site was hit by a Google update. Treat it as a warning sign.
Earn links from many unique, strong and relevant domains over time. Quick tricks raise the number but rarely help rankings.
